White Line by David Fokos
Art & Photography October 7th, 2009
David Fokos was born in Baltimore, lives in San Diego, and spent time in between in Boston, upstate New York, and Washington D.C. Still, the place he says feels most like home is Martha’s Vineyard, where he first visited 32 years ago, and where his parents now live year-round. His affecting black-and-white photos of the island reflect this bond: “It is the inner peace and calm I experience here that I have tried to express through my work.” In White Line, Fokos captures the view of the dock in Oak Bluffs just after the last ferry of the day has departed. “Many thousands of people have spent time staring down this dock waiting to load their cars,” he says. “I made this shot because I love the calm that falls over the island after the last ferry is gone. I also thought that the weathered wood of the dock well expressed the history and important role the ferry has played for so many years.”
Fokos is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Boise Art Museum, and the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, as well as numerous corporate collections. He is represented by galleries in Europe, Japan, and North America, including Nashville’s Richter Gallery.
