Hidden Hamptons

Books August 23rd, 2011

Assouline’s Hampton Gardens offers readers an exclusive—and visually stunning—look behind the privet hedges and wrought iron gates of one of the world’s most sought-after residential areas.

Photographers Mary Ellen Bartley and Doug Young showcase gardens by such noted landscape designers as Edwina von Gal, Oehme van Sweden, and Miranda Brooks, and wonderful vintage black-and-white images of everything from gilded era gatherings to more recent 20th century bashes are mixed in between.  Among the 155 images are two featuring Grey Gardens, home of Big and Little Edie Beale. The house and gardens have been restored to their former splendor by current owners Sally and Ben Bradlee, who thoughtfully kept intact the gravestone of “Spot Beale, A Dog,” which reads “A Nobler Gentleman Never Lived.”

Spot’s grave is but one of the unexpected delights of this sumptuous book.  Another is the fact that author Jack Delashmet is donating 100 percent of his profits to God’s Love We Deliver.
