In the News

This winter, Ritz-Carlton Magazine found one of our most wonderful hidden gems – Nick Harvill Libraries! For their Winter 2014 issue, they did a wonderful story around Scottish heritage, the tradition of family tartans and presenting the rich history of those things in your home. See below the gorgeous story that we are so proud to show off!

Not only does Nick Harvill have this wonderful Tartans of the Clans & Families of Scotland (Vintage, 1938) book, but he has countless vintage books that add character and excitement to any bookshelf. And not to mention, these collectibles are perfect for those who have any specific interests. Take a look for yourself!

Everyone loves to find the best holiday gifts for their loved ones… especially at a great price! – a Nashville based lifestyle publication (with impeccable taste) recently featured several of our great artisans in a story about the top 50 gifts of 2013 that are all under $50 and Southern foodie gifts. What could be better? So if you’re looking for some last minute gift solutions – see below for all their ideas with their comments on each:

“Nye’s Cream Sandwiches is located in Wilmington, NC, and was a Martha Stewart American Made Audience Choice Award nominee. We’ve sampled these and they are DIVINE. Order the following sample pack from Taigan: Pumpkin Cranberry Spice, Apple Pie and Caramel Latte and Blackberry Cobbler”

“For those who understand that a “Yes, Ma’am” and “No, Sir” are words we hand down from generation to generation, this poster is perfect. Warning: Mother-In-Laws: DO NOT SEND TO YOUR DAUGHTER IN LAW. (She will talk about you for decades if you do.) But, otherwise, this is a fun gift for a sibling, especially one who has left the South and misses it!”

“We first found out about Schermer Pecans through The Southern C Summit. The gals that run this know their Southern food and they oohed and aahed over this product, with good reason. Have your gift be likewise received! $44 for a set of three.”

grey salt

“The grey color indicates a high content of minerals and nutrients (not found in the iodized salt we all grew up with). This salt is collected using wooden rakes, ensuring that no metal ever touches it. At just $12, this salt makes a great gift.”

nugget hoops

“These earrings are a great take on the traditional hoop. Seriously, we all are kinda hoping they end up in our own stockings. Teeny-tiny metallic beads are threaded onto the fine hoops, creating these light earrings that you, or your gift recipient, will reach for time and time again. Designer: FriedaSophie”

fudge 2

“Made in small batches in Montogomery, Texas, this fudge is loaded with goodness: ‘there’s more crunchy, nutty, coconutty per square inch than a Texas mile. That’s OUR fudge factor – where small isn’t really small at all. One taste and you’ll know, we’re not messin’ around.’ Intrigued? Us, too.”

cream cheese

“Made in Thomasville, GA, by Sweet Grass Dairy, this cheese has converts to GA cheese throughout more than the Southern region; the accolades pour in from all over. Send some of this cheese to your own cheese monger and then send some to yourself as well.”

ham biscuits

“We thought the price was too high until we broke down and bought some. Damn, these are good. I mean, slap your mama, open the front door and scream, bang on a pot GOOD.”

So in our opinion, you really can’t go wrong with any of these gift ideas!! Happy shopping!

Not only does Fritz Orr create the most beautifully handcrafted wooden canoe and stand-up paddles you’ve ever seen, but he also gives a percentage of his sales back to the camps he loves so dearly – Camp High Rocks for boys and Camp Merrie-Woode for girls. This is one of the many reasons we love him.

Fritz Orr, III – famed wood craftsman on Taigan who even won Garden & Gun Magazine’s “Made in the South” awards – is donating 50% of the proceeds from all sales of his “High Rocks Paddle” and “Merrie-Woode Captain’s Paddle” to each camp’s respective Campership Funds. These funds give more children the opportunity to experience the joy and companionship of summer camp – one thing Fritz is extremely passionate about.

His paddles are functional works of art well suited at home on display as well as on the river, and of course they make an amazing gift for your outdoorsy loved one. Purchasing a paddle means you’re helping a deserving young girl or boy who would not otherwise be able to experience the joy of these two camps.

So how can you help and be a part of this effort? Purchase either the “High Rocks Paddle” or the “Merrie-Woode Captain’s Paddle” in his shop on Taigan. This is the perfect gift for your family member or friend and also gives back to a great cause.

We’re excited to introduce FOSTER’S MARKET!

Screen Shot 2013-11-19 at 2.50.12 PM

Foster’s Market is a gourmet food market and cafe, focusing on scratch made Southern Cuisine. The awesome food, the superior service, the staff, the fun and the unexpected are what makes the Foster’s experience a unique and rewarding one.

Why we chose Foster’s Market:

Sara Foster and her husband, Peter Sellers, moved to Durham, North Carolina and opened Foster’s Market in 1990, introducing great seasonal prepared foods to eat in or take out, specialty grocery items, locally roasted coffee and select wines. Foster’s immediately became a wonderful gathering spot for Durham residents and Duke University students, professors and employees. Over the years Foster’s Market has won many awards from “Small Business of the Year” to “Best Lunch Spot in the Triangle.” Sara also received the award for “2010 Restaurateur of the Year” from the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association. We’re thrilled to have Sara’s signature items and cookbooks on Taigan!
