Each year during Mardi Gras, the women—and the tables—of New Orleans are decked out in purple, green, and gold.
Pictured above, clockwise from far left:
During the season, New Orleans women may need as many as a half dozen evening gowns. But these two frocks, in the classic Mardi Gras colors of green and purple, would look sensational on any woman in any city. Available at Mimi, the green brocade gown has a gathered bodice embellished at the top with sequins and stones. The purple (or, to be precise, “eggplantâ€) gown, also at Mimi, is in satin-backed crepe from Notte by Marchesa and has a fashionable empire bodice and one shoulder detail.
King Cakes are typically iced in the Mardi Colors of purple, green, and gold—which, respectively, stand for justice, faith, and power. Before the days of liability lawsuits, a tiny plastic baby was baked inside, and whoever got it was blessed with good luck throughout the year and also had to give the next season’s King Cake party. These days the baby comes in the packaging, but the tradition is no less fun. This version from Sucré is by far the most elegant one we’ve seen—and the most delicious. The cake features the classic buttery dough sweetened with cinnamon and sugar, but it also has a luscious cream cheese filling. Order now for delivery by Fat Tuesday. It’s the perfect centerpiece for a Mardi Gras dinner party, as well as a built-in dessert.
“Throw me something, Mister,†is the cry up and down all the parade routes in the city, and the most prized throws are always gorgeous beads. We’re pretty sure none will be as gorgeous as this poured glass strand by Gripoix at House of Lavande. Gripoix has made jewelry for couture houses—including, most notably, Chanel—since 1867, exactly ten years after the first Mardi Gras parade made its way through New Orleans!
There are no more glamorous Mardi Gras masks than these beautifully detailed, handmade versions by Goldbug Studio at The Mercantile. Enhance your mystery by wearing one—or put a few on the table with the King Cake and you’ll have the chicest decorations in town.
These faceted quartz earrings set in hammered 24 karat yellow gold are the perfect Mardi Gras accessory—especially if you’re wearing one of the dresses on the left. Available at Amanda Pinson, they will carry you well past next week’s festivities—we think they’d look equally swell with floaty summer frocks.
