We just returned from the 2013 Summer Fancy Food Show in New York City – the biggest and, yes, fanciest, trade show in the specialty food industry! This show is no joke – there are 2,400 exhibitors from around the world and tens of thousands of attendees including specialty shops, grocery store chains, importers/exporters, media outlets, celebrities (Martha Stewart, anyone?), event planners and caterers. It’s an amazing opportunity for our small-town ice cream sandwich business to make some big-time connections. At the 2012 show in Washington D.C. (our very first Fancy Food Show), we were discovered by Taigan’s CEO Elizabeth Nichols, connected with Hillary Clinton’s event planners, and made contacts that resulted in our first shipment of 22,000 Nye’s Cream Sandwiches to Dubai! The air was electric once again at the 2013 Fancy Food Show, and we can’t wait to see what opportunities are in store.
At the Fancy Food Show, tasting is believing. Packaging and booth presentation can unquestionably attract potential buyers to your booth, but it’s all for naught unless you have a product that dazzles the taste buds. And with 180,000 foods to sample, show attendees are understandably choosy about what they taste. With samples of eight Nye’s Cream Sandwiches at the show, we were often asked “Which flavor do you recommend?” That is a simple question with a not-so-simple answer. I am a die-hard Peppermint Chocolate fan, Christian is (currently) loyal to Banana Nut Chocolate, and our 11-year-old son Nicholas is hooked on Coconut Chocolate. Wanting to confirm our (okay, my) picks, I created a poll on our Facebook page asking fans to share their favorite flavors. It seems that Coconut Chocolate and Key Lime Pie edged out the other flavors, but there was also lots of love for Strawberry Shortcake, Blueberry Pie and our seasonal Pumpkin Cranberry Spice. One thing was clear – there is a Nye’s Cream Sandwich for everyone!
So which Nye’s Cream Sandwich is right for you? I can’t answer that for you, but I can provide a sneak peek at the “anatomy” of our sandwiches to help you decide for yourself. Every Nye’s Cream Sandwich has two distinct elements – ice cream and cookie. It is the synergy between these components that completes the flavor profile and creates the Nye’s experience. Having “sampled” my share of sandwiches, I will do my best to describe a few of Christian’s creations. For the traditionalist searching for a sandwich reminiscent of days gone by, the Vanilla Chocolate – vanilla bean ice cream with a chewy chocolate ganache cookie – may be your best bet. If you are in the mood for something light and refreshing, the Key Lime Pie – zested key lime ice cream with a graham cookie – or the Lemon Cardamom – Meyer’s lemon ice cream with a ginger cardamom cookie – will likely hit the spot. Then again, you can’t go wrong with Strawberry Shortcake – chunky strawberry ice cream in a chewy sugar cookie. And if you even think you might like coconut, the Coconut Chocolate – toasted coconut ice cream with a chocolate ganache cookie – will not disappoint.
If all these options leave you more confused than ever, your best bet is to try our samplers (classic or seasonal) to find your favorite. We recommend cutting the sandwiches into quarters and hosting a tasting party with your friends and family so everyone can find their perfect match. But fair warning … if you are “Nyes” enough to share your sandwiches, expect some good-natured disagreement around the table as to which Nye’s Cream Sandwich is the best.
Have a Nye’s Day –
