If you’ve ever felt slightly envious of that friend who discovered her signature scent as a teen and hasn’t strayed since, then read on. You might not have committed to ‘the one’ yet – that perfume which people inextricably associate with you – but there’s still time. Here’s how to find your failsafe fragrance… (Image from The Glitter Guide.)

There are five scent families for women: fresh, floral, citrus, woody and oriental, and which one suits you will depend largely on your skin chemistry. Find out what works and what doesn’t by applying a spritz or two and then give the perfume time to settle. Fragrances evaporate in layers – with top notes disappearing after 10 minutes and the base notes emerging after a few hours – and can smell quite different on your wrist to how they did on the tester strip. Once you know whether sweet, fresh or intense smells agree with your skin you’ll have narrowed down the search significantly.

Skin type is the second important factor. Dry skin (almost universal at this time of year) doesn’t hold top notes very well, in which case you’ll require a much more powerful and potent fragrance for longevity. Luckily heavy, evening-ready fragrances are having a moment right now, so seek out notes of amber, patchouli and white musk that will linger on into cocktail hour.
