Detox with David

People June 12th, 2012

As a trainer to the stars (Heidi Klum, Faith Hill, Kerry Washington, and Anne Hathaway to name a few) it’s no wonder that David Kirsch is considered the authority on everything from workout regimes to healthy eating. Here he chats with Stephanie Maxwell of Maxwell Aesthetics about his wellness approach and his favorite finds on Taigan.

Where are the best places in NY to break a free sweat?

I love working out outside when it is a beautiful day. Hudson River Walk is a great place to run, do push-ups, try one of my signature bootcamps or play soccer with your kids. Central Park is also a great place to break a sweat. It's so beautiful and with so many other people around it is a great way to find your motivation.

Any healthy food and drink places you can recommend in the city?

USQ Café – I absolutely love the tuna burger. It tastes delicious. Or if I want to treat myself, I will have the white bean tostada.

ABC Kitchen – This is one of my new favorite restaurants. I love the grilled spicy lobster.

My favorite place for a quick snack is Shake Shack in the middle of Madison Square Park. I love the Bird Dog!

I love the Union Square Green Market. It has the most amazing, fresh produce and I love picking up fresh flowers for our home.

What do you recommend for a post-workout snack?

Post-workout nutrition is important part of your routine. An hour of intensive training is a lot of wear-and-tear on your muscles so it is important to feed them with protein post-training. I suggest trying my Protein Plus Shakes or KIRSCHBARs.

What is your typical day like?

It always varies with training appointments, business appointments and playing with my daughters.

If we could change one thing to live fitter/healthier lives, what would it be?

The way you think about fitness and your approach to it. Before one goes to change their physical wellness and physical appearance, they really need to think about their mental wellness and mindset. It's very important that the mind and body synergistically work well together. Focusing only on your body and not the wellness of your mind will prevent you from achieving total wellness.

Any tips on motivation?

Try on a pair of skinny jeans or a bikini to motivate yourself. The scale is not the best way to measure your level of fitness. Looking at you body (not the scale!) every day is a great motivator.

Is it different training male vs. female?

Females are often more focused and motivated in their training. It is sometimes easier to connect with females because they have clear objectives and discipline.

How has being a Dad to beautiful twin girls changed you?

It has given me more balance in my life and helped me to prioritize. It has made me more grateful for the small things in life. It has also helped me to reconnect in a better way to the child within.

What is the quickest healthy way to lose a few pounds?

Combine my 48HR Super Charged Cleanse with my 5-Day Ultimate Detox to help break bad eating habits. After the cleanses are finished, eat 5 small meals a day full of lean protein, healthy carbohydrates like beans and quinoa, and lots of vegetables. Make sure to avoid the ABC's of nutrition – no alcohol, bread, starchy carbs & coffee, dairy, extra sweets and fruits & most fasts.

At the same time, bump up your cardio to an hour, four times a week, making sure to do circuit training that incorporates upper and lower body workouts like targeted exercises from my Abs & Arms and Butt Book.
